The Grand Orient de France is a federation of Lodges and not a federation of its members.
Each Freemason is coopted by a Lodge which in turn is affiliated to the allegiance. The exercise of responsabilities both within the Lodge itself and on a national level is based on elections, both the Lodges and the allegiance are totally democratic in structure.

Its working methods

The President of the Lodge is the Worshipful Master and the other people with special responsabilities are known as Officers because they hold different Offices (Speaker, Treasurer, Hospitaller ...) and are elected for a year by the members of the Lodge, known as brothers, since Freemasonry is a Brotherhood.

The Convent or General Assembly is the Legislative of the Allegiance made up of one delegate per Lodge : it elects 35 members to its Council which forms the Executive and a Judicial Chamber which is the judiciary; all these institutions function independently of one another. An additional institution is the National Commission for Solidarity whose role is to come to the aid of Masons who are in need.

The Council elected from amongst its members Board one of whom is the Grand Master who is the Allegiance's National President and its only representative outside the Order abroad.

(...) Its motto is : Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.
